Home of the Pumas

While much of the rhetoric around high-quality secondary education focuses on AP and dual enrollment courses, ACT scores, and college admissions, we believe it’s important for parents and other stakeholders to understand the richness of our school community beyond just statistics.

As a college-preparatory school, we are unwavering in our commitment to academic excellence. Our students have gained admission to prestigious institutions like the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Loyola University, Pomona College, and Yale. Our recent graduates have gone on to become leaders in various fields, including education, engineering, medicine, nursing, and academia—one even serves as a systems analyst for the FBI.

While these accomplishments are remarkable, we also take immense pride in our unique status as the most diverse charter school in the City of Chicago. With over 40 languages represented among our student body, we are, in fact, the world at home.

Named after the renowned African American writer and educator Ralph Ellison, who gained international acclaim with his groundbreaking novel Invisible Man, our school embodies his transformative insights into race, identity, and the American experience. Since opening in August 2006, Ralph Ellison High School has distinguished itself through its dedication to cultivating a vibrant community of learners.

Our educators work collaboratively with students to support their academic, social, and personal development, ensuring each individual thrives.
